flipped and work continues

flipped the body part way today to start the clean up of the underbody . Due to the flares the height needed to flip completely is a bit much . but as shown in the photos the rotation is enough to work comfortably . When the floor pan / rear seat pan was installed the welding process use flux . as such this rusts anything it touches. Although the car is to be hot dipped to neutralize any rust i would be happier if i clean as much off as possible first. As there is still underbody sealer to remove everything is done at once.

Rotisserie built and body mounted

Finally i have the rotisserie built and the body is mounted ready for the clean up of the lower chassis and checking over the measurements of the suspension points confirming that the body is correct.
There is defiantly a slight variation in the rear torsion bar with approx a 4mm gap when mounted on axle stands on a flat floor. I have a panel beater ( who painted my 944 lwt) who will get the body on the chassis machine and fix any variation.
Once this is done i can mount the roll bar and strut brace.

body clean up

Well managed to get some time in this weekend . First on the list was to get the RHS battery box off. This was to be drilling out the spot welds and dropping it out , but the top welds were impossible to get to so in the end we cut it off and ground out the left overs.
This box is not needed and we believe alot of ST's build had this done so to not inhibit the flow of air to the main oil cooler located in the RHS front guard.
This will be blanked off with a 0.8mm panel welded into place.
More time was sent cleaning up the inner guards and panels , front scuttle and starting on the rear seats. Every inch of the car will be hand sanded and cleaned prior to a hot bath to neutralize any internal rust and 2 pot each primed . But for now there is alot of stripping / cleaning and fixing spot welds / pin holes . This will take 2-3 months and i'm off to Europe for lemans in 3 weeks

PHOTO'S

Nothing has happened for awhile on this due to work commitments so it's time to get get back into it. Over the next few weeks i will mock up and weld the arms to attach the body to the rotisserie and work on cleaning up the body welds and fill any pin holes found.
So pretty boring/ time consuming stuff but i'll get some before and after photos arranged .
Come June i will be in Europe for 8 weeks to see the 24hrs le mans / le mans classic / good wood and do some research at the porsche musuem to add data to the build , so expect a delay before the body is ready for paint come December.

Well i got the call "done all i can come and get it ..." so the body work is now 90% and carl is off to Aussie . so now the work is up to me.
The body is home and we start the clean up all of the welds , touch up the panel work and get it all connected to the rotisserie for final stripping of the last of the underseal / paint .It all looks like a bit of a Frankenstein but time on the body will sort all. So the following photos show the final mock up using std guards / hood and rear lid the doors are yet to have the new skins but the stance of the rear gives you the first HELLS BELLS idea of what a beast this car will be.

PHOTOS

we have to start thinking paint at this stage and i have a couple of shops lined up who are very keen to give it a go. The base color is light yellow , with baha red in the script , but the blue highlight is an unknown at this point . I need to research some more .
I managed to pick up a 1;18th model made by eagle race many years ago as a part guide and this is coming from england. So here's the color scheme.

We'll it's been awhile since the last post but Carls been working through and we are well along. The replica hinge for the oil tank is done and attached as is the through body oil pipes built by Race FX . The front inner guards have had work including battery boxes , of which one (passenger side ) will be removed. These came off a car brought in for parts .
Most the the front panels in the trunk area are done and replaced and one door hinge post is mocked ready for welding.
So we have the first of the fibreglass gear due in in January with the twin coil mount , ST roll bar and front strut brace.
More to come this hoildays but here's the photos;

PHOTOS

Well carls back from his African Holiday and back into work on the car , i popped in today with a nos rear catch panel to continue the rear work . The panel we have ( which is in good condition ) will be sold on to another member.
carl has over the last few days mocked up the rear quarters , added the flares ( yahoo ) and is getting ready to to have everything welded up , so bar some rust prevention the rear will be finished over the next week.
Photos next week .....

Rear end work

Well we final got the replacement rear slam panel and the scuttle panel from the US , so work has begun with removal of the existing slam panel and fitting of the new . Then we have the fitting of the oil bucket and flap in the rear quarter which has to be switched in to place exactly as the factory would have done . Remember we could not get a 72 rear quarter so we are having to retro fit an existing one. and following the NLA parts we have the oil tank hinge that fits to the body and holds one end of the strap that hold the oil tank under the rear quarter. Again no longer available so i went to a friend at racing FX and we have had a replica built , he is also doing the oil breather pipes that go through the inner guard.( this were rusted through) so photos on line now to bring you up to speed.

http://s359.photobucket.com/albums/oo33/advtracing/911T%20to%20ST%209/?albumview=slideshow
we'll we did the garage crawl today and this gave me a chance to get another update on the cars progress after two weeks away. As you will see in the photos the front trunk panel has been cut out , work has begun on the first rear quarter and further work on the delete of the fuel filler hole in the inner quarter. I found a factory photo that showed the inner guard stamped out with out the cut out for the fuel filler , as such we have filled this area with the matching the rib's.

http://s359.photobucket.com/albums/oo33/advtracing/911t%20to%20ST%208/?albumview=slideshow
